SaaS Keyword Research: From Zero to Page 1 in 90 Days

The exact 90-day keyword research and execution plan for B2B SaaS — intent mapping, page types, quick wins, and the metrics that matter at day 30, 60, and 90.

Keyword research is where most SaaS SEO programs succeed or fail before a single page is published. Target the wrong terms and you'll rank for traffic that never converts. Target the right terms with the wrong page type and Google will rank a competitor instead.

This is the 90-day keyword research plan we run for new SaaS clients at ClerkSEO — from zero research to page 1 rankings on high-intent terms. It's designed for teams with limited bandwidth who need results, not a 500-row spreadsheet nobody uses.

Days 1–7: Build your keyword foundation

Start with your buyers, not a keyword tool. List the exact phrases your sales team hears on discovery calls. Pull questions from support tickets, G2 reviews, and demo recordings. This is your seed list — often more valuable than anything Ahrefs suggests.

Competitor keyword gap analysis

Identify your top 3–5 competitors by market overlap — not just funding size. In Ahrefs or Semrush, export keywords where they rank positions 1–20 and you rank outside top 50 (or don't rank at all). Filter for keywords with commercial or transactional intent.

Exclude branded terms unless you're specifically targeting competitor alternative queries. Focus on terms a buyer would search before they know your brand name.

Intent classification

Tag every keyword with intent: Informational (TOFU), Commercial Investigation (MOFU), Transactional (BOFU). Examples:

  • TOFU: 'what is customer success software' — blog guide
  • MOFU: 'project management for remote teams' — use-case landing page
  • BOFU: 'Asana vs Monday' or 'best CRM for startups' — comparison page
  • BOFU: 'YourCompetitor alternative' — alternative landing page

BOFU and MOFU keywords should get priority in your 90-day plan. TOFU builds authority but rarely converts in the first touch.

Tools stack for week one

  1. Ahrefs or Semrush — competitor gap, DR, SERP analysis
  2. Google Search Console — queries you already rank for (positions 5–20 = quick wins)
  3. Google autocomplete and 'People Also Ask' — long-tail discovery
  4. G2 and Capterra category pages — see how buyers frame categories
  5. Sales call recordings — real language beats tool suggestions

Days 8–14: Map keywords to page types

One keyword, one page, one intent. Never combine 'best project management tools' and 'YourBrand pricing' on the same URL. Google matches pages to intent — mismatch means you won't rank regardless of content quality.

Page type matrix

  • Comparison: '[Competitor A] vs [Competitor B]' or '[YourBrand] vs [Competitor]'
  • Alternative: '[Competitor] alternative' or 'best [Competitor] alternatives'
  • Use-case: '[Solution type] for [industry/team/role]'
  • Category: 'best [category] software' — harder, needs authority
  • Guide: 'how to [solve problem]' — TOFU authority builder
  • Feature: '[specific feature] software' — mid-funnel product-adjacent

Build a spreadsheet: Keyword | Volume | KD | Intent | Page Type | Target URL | Priority (1–3) | Status. Priority 1 = ship in days 15–30. Priority 2 = days 30–60. Priority 3 = days 60–90.

Quick wins from Search Console

Filter queries where you rank positions 5–20 with decent impressions. These are low-hanging fruit — often fixable with on-page optimization, internal links, and content expansion rather than new pages. A page at position 8 can hit position 3 with targeted improvements.

Days 15–30: Ship your first money pages

Publish 2–3 bottom-funnel pages targeting Priority 1 BOFU keywords. Comparison and alternative pages first — they convert highest and often rank faster than broad guides because search intent is specific.

Comparison page structure that ranks

  1. H1: '[Product A] vs [Product B]' or '[YourBrand] vs [Competitor]'
  2. Quick verdict summary at top — 2–3 sentences for skimmers
  3. Feature comparison table — honest, updated, specific
  4. Pricing comparison section — even if approximate, be transparent
  5. Use case recommendations — who should pick each option
  6. FAQ section with schema markup
  7. Single CTA — start trial or book demo

Internal link from relevant blog posts and your homepage navigation if appropriate. Submit URL in Search Console after publishing.

On-page optimization checklist

  • Title tag: primary keyword near front, under 60 characters
  • Meta description: benefit + keyword, under 155 characters
  • H1 matches primary keyword naturally
  • First 100 words include primary keyword and clear value prop
  • 2–3 internal links to related pages
  • Schema: FAQ or Article markup where applicable
  • Images with descriptive alt text

Days 31–60: Authority building and content expansion

Money pages need backlinks to rank on competitive terms. Begin DR 50+ outreach in parallel with content expansion — don't wait until month three to start link building.

Link targets aligned to keywords

For each Priority 1 keyword, identify which domains rank on page 1. Those sites are relevance signals — getting links from them (or similar sites) supports your target page. Use Ahrefs 'Link intersect' to find domains linking to competitors but not you.

Publish one pillar guide

Choose your highest-volume TOFU term related to your product category. Write 2,000+ words with original insights — not a rehash of page 1 results. Include internal links to your money pages. Pillar content earns links naturally and passes authority downstream.

Example: if you sell project management software, a pillar on 'Remote team productivity frameworks' links to your use-case page 'Project management for remote teams' and your comparison pages.

Track leading indicators weekly

  • Target pages indexed in Search Console
  • Impressions climbing for target keywords (even before clicks)
  • Average position trend for Priority 1 terms
  • New referring domains pointing to money pages
  • Internal link count to priority pages

Days 61–90: Optimize, refresh, and scale

Review performance data and double down on what's working. Cut what isn't.

Position 5–15 optimization sprint

Pages ranking positions 5–15 get a focused optimization pass: expand content 20–30%, improve title and meta, add FAQ schema, build 2–3 internal links from fresh blog content, and earn 1–2 relevant backlinks directly to the page.

Content refresh on existing pages

Update publish dates, refresh stats, add new sections based on 'People Also Ask' queries. Google treats substantial refreshes as quality signals on competitive terms.

Scale Priority 2 keywords

Ship the next 2–3 pages from your keyword map. By day 90 you should have 5–8 targeted pages live, 1 pillar guide, and 10–20 quality backlinks supporting money pages.

Measuring success at day 90

Don't expect every Priority 1 keyword on page 1 at day 90 — competitive terms take longer. Success at 90 days looks like:

  • 5–8 money pages indexed and receiving impressions
  • 2–3 keywords moved from unranked to positions 10–30
  • 1–2 keywords in positions 5–15 (optimization candidates)
  • 10+ quality referring domains acquired
  • Organic traffic to money pages (not just blog) trending up
  • At least 1 trial or demo attributed to organic landing page

Common keyword research mistakes

  • Chasing high volume without checking intent — 10K volume informational term vs 400 volume BOFU term
  • Ignoring Search Console data you already have
  • One page targeting multiple unrelated intents
  • Skipping competitor gap analysis and guessing keywords
  • Publishing TOFU blog posts before BOFU money pages exist
  • Never updating the keyword map — SaaS markets shift quarterly
  • Measuring blog traffic instead of money page rankings and conversions

Keyword research is not a one-time project. Revisit your map every quarter. Add terms from new sales calls, competitor moves, and Search Console query reports. The teams that win organic treat keyword strategy as living documentation — not a PDF from onboarding.
